Enemies often do 2 units of damage but the rare health pickups only give you half a unit. In general, it is very difficult to refill your health as well. Its fire attack is impossible to dodge, is poorly telegraphed, takes 2 of the 5 health you start with, and sends you running uncontrollably, potentially getting hit by the same attack again! This enemy feels like something from a student project, not a retail game from a respected developer. That said, I found a few enemies are really tedious to deal with, the worst of which were in the damn hub world! The fire cougar in particular was incredibly frustrating and felt downright amateur. Stronger enemies and bosses can usually be cheesed with repetitive patterns as well if you use your abilities creatively enough. Terrible Combat: The gun is too useful, disposing of smaller enemies with no effort or risk.

Overall it’s just not tight, rewarding platforming. The bouncy ball is surprisingly fun and not that buggy but you’ll often find yourself wrestling with the game’s physics or doing things in an awkward way that the game clearly didn’t intend. Grabbing ledges is very unreliable and often necessary. Oftentimes I was able to jump on things I felt I shouldn’t be able to while I slid off of platforms I felt I should have been able to jump on. Mediocre Platforming: It has unreliable hit detection and the bouncy ball is far too useful. I have so many issues with this game that I’m just going to enumerate them: This game is death by a thousand paper cuts and fails to stand out in a sea of 3D platformers. Well, I finally forced myself to play through this game on steam and wow am I disappointed.

#Psychonauts review Ps4
I tried again a few years later with the same result and then again a year or two ago when it was released on PS4 but I just couldn’t get into it. I first tried to play it in 2008 but got bored around the second or third level and fell off. It’s a cult classic that a lot of people regard highly but I never managed to get into it. With all that said, Psychonauts has always been the one that got away for me. I would go so far as to say I’m a dirty little skank for 3D platformers.
#Psychonauts review Pc
I got 999 moons in Mario Odyssey, 100% in Yooka Laylee, I bought a gaming PC just to play A Hat In Time a few months earlier than the console release, and I’ve played many indie 3D platformers of questionable quality and still had a blast. It’s one of my favorite genres and I’m always on the hunt for my next fix. Let me start by saying that I love 3D platformers.
